What Was It All For? Learning to Let Go and Trust God's Next Chapter
As I work toward closing the boutique in the months ahead (in mid January), there has been a question that keeps popping up in my mind.
I wave it away as you would a bothersome fly. But as fly's and thoughts do... it kept coming back.
What was it all for?
The boutique. The hours I've spent in one place, praying and hoping something big would grow from it. The videos and countless photos on my phone, all centered around the business. The time, the energy, the ideas, the dreams, and the years of my life spent working toward something I truly believed in.
Do I delete the pictures? Are they now just wasted space on my phone? What do I do with all the memories, all the work, and all the things I hoped this business would become?
What, my sweet friends, was it all for?
And I have a feeling some of you have asked that very same question.
Maybe your season wasn't a business. Maybe it was a job you poured yourself into, a relationship you fought to save, a dream you prayed over for years, or a season of motherhood that looked nothing like you imagined it would. Maybe you stepped out in faith, did what you believed God was asking you to do, and somehow ended up in a place you never expected.
And now you're looking back, wondering, what any of it was for.
God Wastes Nothing
The honest answer is that sometimes it takes time for things to make sense.
Sometimes we can look back on a difficult season and immediately see what God was teaching us. Other times, the understanding comes slowly. And sometimes, we may never fully understand why certain things happened the way they did.
But I know this: God uses everything.
Romans 8:28 reminds us that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. It doesn't say all things will feel good. It doesn't promise that every dream will unfold the way we imagined. But it reminds us that our circumstances are never beyond His ability to work for good.
I believe that about my boutique, too.
I don't know everything God will do with these years. I don't know all the ways He has used this business in my life or in the lives of the people who have walked through its doors. I may not see the full picture for a long time.
But I know the hours weren't meaningless simply because this season is ending.
The prayers mattered. The lessons mattered. The people mattered. The obedience mattered. The ways God stretched me, challenged me, and taught me to depend on Him mattered.
And those pictures on my phone? No, I don't think they're wasted space. They're reminders of a chapter in my story. A chapter that may be closing, but one that will always be part of who I am.
The same is true for you.
Maybe the job that ended taught you something you needed for the next one. Maybe the dream that didn't unfold the way you hoped grew your faith in ways you couldn't have anticipated. Maybe the difficult season you would never choose again has given you compassion for someone walking through it now.
We don't have to understand every detail to believe God can use it.
The Hard Part: Letting Go Before We Know What's Next
This is where I am.
As I prepare to close the doors of the boutique, I don't have every answer. Will I open another storefront someday? Maybe. Will I keep the online store? Perhaps. I've never had the kind of success online that I hoped for, so I honestly don't know what that will look like.
There are possibilities, but no clear picture of what comes next.
And for someone who has spent years working toward something, planning the next thing, and trying to grow a business... it just feels weird!
I'm used to having something to work on. Something to build. Something to figure out.
But lately, I keep feeling this gentle nudge from God:
Don't rush to the next thing.
And I wonder if that is a word someone else needs to hear, too.
Maybe we are so eager to make sense of the season that just ended that we immediately start looking for something to replace it. We want a new plan, a new dream, a new direction. We want to know that all the time and effort we invested will lead to something else.
We want the next thing to make the last thing make sense.
But what if God isn't asking us to figure it all out right now?
What if He's asking us to be still long enough to hear Him?
It's been a long time since I've sat in the quiet without a business to grow. And if I'm being honest, I'm more at peace in the quite than I thought I'd be.
Such peace can only come from God.
It has me curious what He has planned for the future.
I wonder what He might reveal when I'm no longer so busy building. I wonder what He is working out in my heart, what He wants to teach me, and where He might lead me when I'm willing to stop trying to lead myself.
Maybe this season isn't about finding the next thing as quickly as possible. Maybe it's about learning to sit in the quiet and just be for a bit.
A Little Note From My Heart
To those of you who have supported Birkland Boutique, prayed for us, shopped with us, visited us, or simply followed along over the years, thank you. Truly.
Closing the storefront is a bittersweet decision, and I am sorry to take this little piece of our community away. This business has been a meaningful chapter in my life, and I'm so grateful that you've been part of it.
I do know that writing here on the blog has become a new and meaningful way to connect with you. And for that, I am SO grateful and excited! I want to stay connected. I don't feel that door shutting.
Maybe this space will become a place where we can keep walking through life's seasons together. A place where we can talk about faith, ask honest questions, share what God is teaching us, and encourage one another to keep following Jesus even when the road doesn't look the way we expected.
I am excited to see what the future brings and most importantly I am so glad we still have a space to stay connected.
With love,
Lesly
