Sometimes the next step isn't figuring everything out. It's letting go and trusting God.

What If I Just Let Go?

As we step out into the great unknown, following a path God has set before us without knowing exactly where it leads, I feel Him asking me to let go.

Let go of what I thought and wanted this journey to look like.

I told God to write this story, but I am having the hardest time letting go of that pen. I keep thinking I have, but when I look down, the pen is still in my hand, trying to solve problems and find solutions to things I simply cannot.

And so God asked me this question:

“What if, to find ‘it,’ you had to completely let go?”

I didn’t hear Him say it. I felt it. And it felt like it was asked in such a gentle way.

I’ve had to surrender many times in life. When my husband walked through cancer. When we sold our dearly loved home. When dreams came crashing down.

But this… this felt different. It felt like the deepest kind of surrender that had ever been asked of me.

It’s as if all the other times were strengthening my muscles of trust, preparing me to follow Him down this path for this very moment.

Talk about a pivotal point in your life! I mean, my gosh! Right?

Uhh… Geeze… Umm… Yikes?!

All the things going through my mind.

But it brought me to tears at the same time. Because surrender, I know, is the only way through what is in front of us.

I had a Moses moment

You know how God spoke to Moses through the burning bush and told him to go free His people from Pharaoh? And Moses offered a million excuses?

In Exodus 3 and 4, Moses spoke to God. He asked, “Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh?” (Exodus 3:11, KJV). He worried that the Israelites wouldn't believe him or listen to him. He questioned what he should say if they asked who had sent him. And then, as if all that wasn't enough, he finally told God that he wasn't a good speaker and asked Him to send someone else!

I mean, Moses had a lot of reasons why he wasn't the right guy for the job. At least, that's what he thought.

And goodness, can't we do the same thing? We look at what's in front of us and see all the reasons it might not work. We look at what we don't know, what we don't have, and all the things that could go wrong. We want answers. We want a plan. We want to know how it's all going to work out before we take the next step.

I didn't offer excuses as much as I told God what I needed to make me happy. I named off a few things that I felt I needed to be happy and feel content.

And you know what God said?

“I know what you need.”

It's like He has an answer for everything.

Tucked into those words, “I know what you need,” was a reminder that He made me. He formed me. He knows me better than I know myself.

Psalm 139:13–14 says

For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.

He formed us in our mother's womb. He knows the very depths of us. Our desires, our dreams, our weaknesses, and even the things we struggle to understand about ourselves. None of it is a surprise to Him.

We can trust Him.

We can trust Him to show us what we need and what we want. Because the things we've been clinging to, so hard, could be the very things holding us back.

What if, sweet friends, what He has for us is far beyond what we could imagine or do for ourselves?

And the only way to get there… is to completely surrender.

Wouldn’t it be worth it?

With Love,
Lesly
